When Zinzi’s cityy tightens the screws on her, she decides to free herself of her drug debt by taking on a case that she normally wouldn’t – to find a missing person, specifically, a half of a popular music duo iJusi.

And if the animal dies, they are consumed by a cloud known as the Undertow. Zoo City, this is where the magic is.

And even then, I’d be okay with it, if I felt the novel were cast as a tragedy. Extraordinary Women from South Africa’s Past Views Read Edit View history. It is set in South Africa but the place setting is very much inner city American ghetto.

To continue this theme, when was zo last time anybody read an urban fantasy book with main character being a black woman and the majority of people being black? Although it has some magical elements, but I think that a lquren of people who don’t normally read fantasy would really enjoy it.

Johannesburg is a major city, after all, and the animal angle is clearly unreal. The final scene has a positively cheery tone.

Once again I regret not being able to give this book its true rating which is 3. There are plenty of bodies scattered about. I really did not care for her; this is despite the fact that the zooo plot was very interesting and this is what kept me reading.
