Have Odi’s death be partly her responsibility, have Carmen survive, have Odi not escape the undertow, something. She clearly put a lot of thought and effort into writing this book. It was a fun ride mixed with a lot of disturbing elements. Zinzi is a fun narrator — clearly damaged, a sarcastic smartass hip to pop culture she references lolcats! When Zinzi’s cityy tightens the screws on her, she decides to free herself of her drug debt by taking on a case that she normally wouldn’t – to find a missing person, specifically, a half of a popular music duo iJusi.

And if the animal dies, they are consumed by a cloud known as the Undertow. Zoo City, this is where the magic is.

And even then, I’d be okay with it, if I felt the novel were cast as a tragedy. Extraordinary Women from South Africa’s Past Views Read Edit View history. It is set in South Africa but the place setting is very much inner city American ghetto.

Johannesburg is a major city, after all, and the animal angle is clearly unreal. The final scene has a positively cheery tone.

Once again I regret not being able to give this book its true rating which is 3. There are plenty of bodies scattered about. I really did not care for her; this is despite the fact that the zooo plot was very interesting and this is what kept me reading.

Herausragend auch das komplette Figurenensemble, das empfand ich als perfekt inszeniert, die einzelnen Charaktere haben alle wunderbar in dieses Cityy gepasst und auch die Handlung ist angenehm komplex. I like the character of Zinzi but the fluidity of her moving from detective to con artist to passable music journalist was hard to picture.

Zinzi has to find the missing person while dodging murder charges, finding clues, and trying to survive in the slum.
