Du’a Kumayl

Through the negation engllish personal desires and attributes, a Muslim may strengthen dka relationship with God through the guidance and imitation of a trained companion of God. Or for the length and period of tribulation?

And over tongues voicing englisy the profession of Your Unity and giving thanks to You in praise. O Allah, verily I ask You with the asking of a submissive, abased and lowly man to show me forbearance, to have mercy on me. Bless Muhammad and his progeny. I entreat Thee begging Thee submissively, humbly and awestrickenly To treat me with clemency and mercy, and to make me pleased and contented with what Thou hast allotted to me And cause me to be modest and unassuming in all circumstances.

And over hearts acknowledging Your Divinity through verification. Canst You see Yourself — Glory be to You My God, and Thine is the praised — hearing within the Fire the voice of a slave surrendered to You, Imprisoned there because of his violations, Tasting the favour of its torment because of his disobedience, And confined within dau levels because of his sin and crime, While he laments to You with the lament of one hopeful for Your mercy, And calls to You with the tongue of those who profess Your Unity And entreats You by Your lordship!

Whose Name is the remedy for all ills and Whose remembrance is a sure cure for all ailments and obedience to Whom makes one self sufficient; have mercy on one whose only asset is hope and whose only armour is lamentation O’ Thou! But now I have turned Thee, my Lord, after being guilty of omissions and transgressions against my soul, apologetically, repentantly, broken heartedly, entreating earnestly for forgiveness, yieldingly confessing to my guilt as I can find no escape from that which was done by me and having no refuge to which I could turn except seeking Thy acceptance of my excuse and admitting me into the realm of Thy capacious mercy.

By Thy honour truly do I swear that, if Thou wilt allow my power of speech to be retained by me in the hell, I shall amongst its inmates cry out bewailingly unto Thee like the cry of those who have faith in Thy kindness and compassion And I shall bemoan for Thee for being deprived of nearness to Thee the lamentation of those who are bereaved, and I shall keep on calling unto Thee: O Thou who existed before the foremost!

Is he who has been believer like unto him who has been ungodly?

English Translation of Dua Kumail

O Knower who was never taught! Thou hast imposed it, to bestow upon me this night and this very hour the forgiveness for all the transgressions that I have been guilty of, for all the sins that I have committed, for all the loathsome acts that I have kept secret and for all the evils done by me, secretly or openly, in concealment or outwardly and for every evil action kujail Thou hast ordered the two noble scribes to confirm whom Kumaail hast appointed to record all my actions and to be witnesses over me along with the limbs of my body, whilst Thou observeth over me besides them and wast witness to those acts concealed from them?

Thou art aware of my weakness to bear even a minor affliction of this world and its consequence and adversity affecting the denizen of this earth, although such afflictions are momentary, short-lived and transient.

So he deluded me through my soul’s caprice and therein destiny favoured him. Ali then advised Kumayl ibn Ziyad to recite this du’a on the eve of i. You put into effect through me a decree in which I followed the caprice of my own soul And [I] did not remain wary of adorning my enemy.

Glory be to You, and Thine is the praise!

So I ask You by the power You hast apportioned And by the decision which You hast determined and imposed and through which You hast overcome him toward whom it has been put into effect, That You forgivest me in this night and at this hour Every offence I have committed, And every sin I have performed, And every ugly thing I have concealed And every folly I have enacted Whether I have hidden or announced it, Or I have concealed it or manifested it And every evil act which You hast commanded the Noble Writers to record, Those whom You hast appointed to watch over what appears from me And whom You hast made, along with my bodily members, witness against me.

Lastly, the view of universal determinism claims that the granting of a prayer is a direct result of terrestrial dispositions in accordance with celestial causes, thus through the laws of the macrocosm. O’ Thou who art dear to the hearts of those who dya believe in Thee! I reckon that though I may patiently endure the scorching fire of Thy hell, yet how can I resign myself to the denial of Thy pity and clemency?

You art more generous than that You shouldst squander him whom You kkmail nurtured. I find no place to flee from what has occurred through me, Nor any place of escape to which I may turn in my affairs, Englisy than Your acceptance of my excuse and Your entering me into the compass of Your mercy.

But You —holy are Your Names—hast sworn that You will fill it with the unbelievers. Far be it from You! I have stretched forth my hands therefore, by Thy honour, respond to my supplication and let me attain my wishes and, by Thy bounty, frustrate not my hopes and protect me from the evils of my enemies, from among the jinns and mankind o’ Thou! Have mercy upon him whose capital is hope And whose weapon is tears!

Dua Kumayl / The Supplication of Kumayl

And grant generously to engglish through Your munificence, And incline toward me with Your splendour And protect me with Your mercy! You art more generous than that You shouldst squander him whom You hast nurtured.

O He whose Name is a remedy, And whose remembrance is a cure, And whose obedience is wealth! Canst You see Yourself engkish me with Your fire after I have professed Your Unity And after the knowledge of You my heart has embraced, And the remembrance of You my tongue has constantly mentioned And the love of You to which my mind has clung, And englksh the sincerity of my confession and my supplication, humble before Your lordship? O Thou who shall exist after the last! This appeal, or invocation may be one calling for blessings or kumall.

I have no argument in what Your destiny put into effect through me therein nor in what Your decree and Your tribulation imposed upon me. Ali ibn Abi Talib.
