That’s my main beef with Anne Lamott’s long essay on prayer.
This slim book consists of three essays on spirituality, each exploring a different type of prayer: I acted and behold, service was joy. I am giving this book five stars first of all because Anne Lamott’s writing resonates with me so much especially with lines like “I hate this, the fact that life is usually Chutes and Ladders, with no guaranteed gains”. In Help, Thanks, Wow, Lamott recounts how she came to these insights, explains what they mean to her and how they have helped, and explores how others have embraced these same ideas.
Lammott doesn’t imply you should say these same exact things to God or expect the same responses. That said, though elegant and wise, this book is still a trifle: Sure, they can be amusing or you may find yourself relating to her experiences.

She does not get why God would forgive tjanks, but she is forgiven, so she accepts it. I think a lot of readers thanjs this book will have the same initial feeling I did once I held it in my hands, which is ” How has Lamott used humor throughout this book to talk about prayer? Her father, Kenneth Lamott, was also a writer and was the basis of her first novel Hard Laughter.
