Recommended to rabbitprincess by: Looking back, I think I was clinging to the three great ladies of crime, Christie, Marsh and Sayers, while I waited for the next female author to come along!

I was initially a bit reluctant to use the cover actually as I thought it might be a bit strong, but it is so much of its time that I found it hard to resist.

I have always wondered how much these characters might have been autobiographical. Sometimes you just cclubbable some pulp fiction, a “whodunnit”, an easy to read detective novel.

The murder-victim of the title is shrewish housewife Mary Connon, found dead–an odd head wound–in front of her TV one evening. I read all the Dalziel and Pascoes years ago and loved the series, although some of them were downright odd.

I never did get round to reading the later ones but am determined to try and get there more or less in chronological order — I do get the impression that Hill did want to experiment with the form and from some of the talkback on this post I get the impression that you and many other fans were left either dissatisfied or mystefied in the wrong way by some of the approaches to the later books.

Warren Clarke however was perfectly cast as Dalziel, though it is clubbabel worth recalling that he was not the first actor to play the role.

The writing by Reginald Hill shifts from one person’s point of view to another very quickly, and many times, very abruptly, which kills the fluidity of the narration.

I’ve given it 2 stars, but it could easily be one star. But just take my word for it.
